Overview
Cleaner. Faster. More Powerful
Inspired by the platform of our most popular underground loaders, the R2900 XE is the first CAT® underground diesel-electric LHD. It is a productive, powerful, and reliable machine designed to meet the needs of underground mining for increased payload, faster loading, and reduced emissions.
Its powerful diesel-electric drive engine complies with the European Stage V standard and provides the power needed to match that of the 18.5-tonne category. The R2900 XE is highly productive, with smooth and fast machine responses, along with improved digging and hauling performance. The use of electric drive components helps reduce fuel consumption and improve productivity, allowing mines to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint.
AdvantagesOptimal Productivity
Thanks to a number of new and improved features, the R2900 XE offers a 20% increase in productivity.
(compared to the R2900G model)
35% Higher Lifting Breakout Force
The R2900 XE employs a high-efficiency electric drive system and is powered by a quiet, reliable, and durable CAT® C15 engine.
Reduced Maintenance and Repair

Security
Improvements in terms of visibility, lighting coverage, and camera, including rear and right side vision cameras with color screen, automatic lights (with high beam and low beam lights), automatic direction change, and arrow lighting on/off functions. Pre-fire equipment, dedicated extinguishing cartridges, and multiple activation points for the fire extinguishing system, including from the cabin. Improved access and exit with non-slip strips on all walking surfaces, a folding handrail system with full coverage, and two emergency exits. Driver presence detection system, which protects the machine and the driver from uncontrolled movements of the equipment, with hydraulic circuit neutralization and door sensor. A tire pressure monitoring system is also available. Safer maintenance with a maintenance area located on the cold side of the engine, thermal protection on post-treatment components, integrated locking/tagging points, front linkage axes for locking the handling arms in position, and bolted towing hooks.
Mastering and Driving Comfort
The rollover protective structure (ROPS) and falling object protective structure (FOPS) are resiliently mounted to the chassis to isolate the driver from vibrations, for a more comfortable driving experience. The current driver system ensures the safety of anyone working inside, on, or around the machine, as no movement of the machine is possible if the driver is not in the cabin. The closed design of the cabin allows for a circulation of fresh, pressurized, and temperature-controlled air, for a more comfortable working environment. Anti-pitch system that facilitates driving on rough terrain, smooth direction changes, reduction of shocks in the kinematic chain, hydraulically cushioned buckets, and boom cylinder stops. The placement of controls, levers, switches, and instruments has been designed to optimize the driver's productivity and reduce fatigue. The integrated STIC™ steering and transmission control system provides maximum responsiveness and control by combining the selection of travel direction, virtual gears, and steering into a single lever. The foot control is improved with a two-pedal design that offers better spacing and placement. The improved high beam and low beam lights allow for automatic direction change and offer automatic on/off functions. Thanks to the hydraulic circuit of the R2900 XE, the driver benefits from greater control and productivity. Equipment control is done through a pilot-operated joystick, which is easy to use and allows for simultaneous lifting and tilting functions to optimize efficiency.
Performance and Productivity
The R2900 XE offers a 20% increase in productivity thanks to a number of new and improved features. Its payload of 18.5 tonnes (20.4 US tons) reduces loading times, making the R2900 XE an efficient 3 or 4-pass loader compatible with the CAT® AD63 dump truck for greater efficiency and higher productivity. The R2900 XE allows for a 52%* acceleration improvement and better machine response, giving drivers greater control over the machine. It can accelerate from 0 to 24 km/h in 6.4 seconds, which is a 52% improvement compared to the R2900G model. It can also achieve a 7%* higher speed on slopes. The R1700-type handling arm can reach higher, allowing for faster and easier loading of larger dump trucks. Its superior hydraulic performance also speeds up and simplifies loading operations. These improvements, among others, result in reduced cycle times, moving a greater amount of material, and low cost per tonne. The Autodig system allows new drivers to become productive more quickly and reduces fatigue for all drivers. Productivity is improved thanks to the hydraulic circuit of the R2900 XE. Variable displacement pumps provide higher flow rates for faster hydraulic cylinder cycle times and powerful lifting forces. The large-bore lifting and tilting cylinders provide exceptional strength, performance, and longevity. *Compared to the R2900G model
Cleaner and more powerful
The R2900 XE uses a high-efficiency electric drive system and is powered by a quiet, reliable, and durable C15 CAT® engine. With a superior energy efficiency of 31%* and a range of emission reduction and aftertreatment options, including a European Stage V configuration and diesel particulate filtration, it provides all the power you need while reducing ventilation costs and helping you achieve your sustainability goals. RPM, fuel consumption, heat dissipation, and exhaust emissions have all been reduced while increasing the power output. Extended maintenance intervals reduce the use of hydrocarbons and increase availability. Proven, designed, integrated, validated, and supported by Caterpillar for its reliability, ease of cooling, and high performance, the switched reluctance (SR) electric drive system. Replacing traditional transmission and torque converter with electric drive allows for reduced RPM, decreased engine exhaust emissions, reduced thermal energy, lower noise levels, low vibration levels, and reduced use of hydrocarbons. *Compared to the R2900G model
Scoops and soil attack tool
The bucket of the R2900 XE has been redesigned to increase its power and simplify maintenance. The wear bars can be replaced more easily and the bucket duct design involves certain areas with easy-to-replace wear pads, reducing the need for welding repairs. Ground Engaging Tools (GET) can be welded, bolted, or hammerless installed, designed to meet specific site needs and match the site's maintenance strategy. Bolt-on Half Arrow (BOHA) GET for bucket blades offer more wear material than standard welded GET, and feature a bolted design that allows for quick and easy removal and replacement. New Durilock tooth system that allows for hammerless installation and maintenance-free retention of Ground Engaging Tools (GET), with three interchangeable tooth systems to meet specific applications. The Cat Bucket Pro application provides real-time data on GET tool performance to help you plan maintenance, manage inventory, and know the cost per US tonne.
Easy Maintenance
The electric drive system with fewer moving parts and fewer parts than the torque converter and traditional mechanical transmission systems allows for extended maintenance intervals for mechanical powertrains. Improved access for maintenance operations, with a pivot-opening radiator guard and consolidation of main maintenance tasks in a centralized maintenance section. Added remotely mounted test ports for testing and troubleshooting. Brake bleeder points in centralized locations. Fuel tank bolted to the chassis, allowing for easy cleaning or replacement in case of damage. Modular design components for simplified removal and installation during repairs.
Technology
Factory-prepared remote operation, with the possibility of integrating the proven MineStar™ CAT® control for underground work, which offers the following advantages: remote control with direct visibility; remote operation; co-pilot mode, which only requires directional input from the driver; and fully autonomous operation, including Autodig. High-resolution dashboard screens with 11 language options to access real-time system information. Machine status in the cabin visible on the digital display and monitored by the Cat Product Link Elite (PLE) system, with optional integrated MineStar Health offerings for proactive maintenance services and predictive equipment analysis. Optional MineStar Fleet software for underground work provides real-time visibility of cycle time, payload, machine position, and other key operational parameters. Optional MineStar Detect software uses a proximity detection system, coupled with a revolutionary communication and tracking network, to prevent incidents and track people and machines in real time.
